Head instructor Bernardo Pitel was born in Brasilia on October 10, 1976 and has emerged as one of the luminaries of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His martial arts journey began with Judo at the tender age of 11, and he later transitioned to Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. However, it was at the age of 18 that Bernardo discovered his true passion—Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Under the tutelage of Joao Roque at the acclaimed Nova Uniao team, he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of this complex and compelling sport.
Bernardo’s competitive spirit and dedication led him to remarkable achievements on the international stage. He is a multiple-time world champion, having secured gold at the prestigious IBJJF World Championships in both the brown and black belt categories in the early 2000s. His success didn’t stop there; Bernardo also claimed titles at the World Cup, Brazilian Nationals, and Pan American Championships, among others. Notably, his victory against Ricardo Vieira in 1998, a competitor then considered unbeatable, marked a significant milestone in his career and established him as a formidable force in the BJJ community.
